Vaginal Ring
Updated:A vaginal ring is a flexible, plastic ring that is inserted into the vagina as a form of hormonal contraception. It releases a combination of estrogen and progestin hormones that are absorbed through the vaginal walls, preventing pregnancy by suppressing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and thinning the uterine lining. The ring is typically worn for three weeks, followed by a one-week break for menstruation.
Additional Information
Vaginal rings are considered a highly effective form of birth control when used correctly. They offer convenience as they only need to be changed once a month, unlike daily birth control pills. Some brands of vaginal rings may also help regulate menstrual cycles and reduce menstrual cramps. However, like other hormonal contraceptives, they do not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Examples
NuvaRing: A popular brand of vaginal ring that releases etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol
Annovera: A newer vaginal ring that can be used for an entire year, being removed for one week each month
