Menstruation

Updated:

Menstruation, commonly known as a period, refers to the monthly shedding of the uterine lining (endometrium) in people who menstruate, resulting in bleeding from the vagina. It is a natural biological process that occurs as part of the menstrual cycle when pregnancy does not occur.

The menstrual cycle is regulated by hormonal changes and typically lasts around 28 days, although cycle length can vary between individuals. Menstruation itself usually lasts between 2 to 7 days.

Additional Information

Menstruation is a key part of the reproductive cycle. Each month, the uterine lining thickens in preparation for a potential pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, hormone levels drop, causing the lining to shed.

Menstrual fluid contains blood, cells from the uterine lining, and cervical mucus. The amount of fluid lost during a period varies but is usually between 30-80ml.

Menstruation typically begins during puberty, between the ages of 10 and 16, a stage known as menarche. It continues until menopause, which usually occurs between the late 40s and early 50s.

Examples

Many people experience abdominal cramps during menstruation due to uterine contractions.

Menstrual products like pads, tampons, or menstrual cups are used to manage menstrual flow.
