Testosterone

Updated:

Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone and an anabolic steroid. It plays a key role in the development of male reproductive tissues such as the testes and prostate, as well as promoting secondary sexual characteristics such as increased muscle and bone mass, and the growth of body hair. Testosterone is produced primarily in the testicles in males and in smaller amounts in the ovaries in females.

Additional Information

While testosterone is often associated with males, it is an important hormone for both sexes. In males, testosterone regulates sex drive (libido), bone mass, fat distribution, muscle mass and strength, and the production of red blood cells and sperm. In females, testosterone is converted into estradiol, the primary female sex hormone. Testosterone levels can affect mood, energy levels, and overall health in both males and females.

Examples

During puberty, rising levels of testosterone promote the development of male sex organs, deepening of the voice, and growth of facial and body hair in adolescent boys.

Some athletes and bodybuilders may use synthetic forms of testosterone to enhance muscle mass and athletic performance, a practice known as doping.
