Testicles
Updated:Testicles, also known as testes, are the male reproductive organs responsible for producing sperm and testosterone. These oval-shaped glands are typically found in pairs and are located outside the body in the scrotum. Testicles play a crucial role in male fertility and sexual development.
Each testicle is about 2 inches long and 1 inch in diameter, though size can vary among individuals. They're protected by several layers of tissue and suspended within the scrotum by the spermatic cord, which also contains blood vessels and nerves.
Additional Information
Testicles serve two primary functions:
Sperm production: The testicles produce millions of sperm cells daily through a process called spermatogenesis.
Hormone production: They secrete testosterone, the primary male sex hormone, which is responsible for the development of male secondary sexual characteristics, libido, and overall male health.
Testicles are sensitive organs and can be a source of sexual pleasure for some individuals. However, they're also vulnerable to injury and various health conditions, making regular self-examinations and check-ups important for male health.
Examples
During puberty, the testicles grow larger and begin producing sperm and increased levels of testosterone.
Men are often advised to perform monthly self-examinations of their testicles to check for any unusual lumps or changes that could indicate health issues.
