Spermicide

Updated:

Spermicide is a contraceptive substance designed to prevent pregnancy by killing or immobilizing sperm. It comes in various forms such as gels, creams, foams, films, or suppositories and is typically inserted into the vagina before sexual intercourse. Spermicides work by creating a chemical barrier that damages sperm cells, preventing them from reaching and fertilizing an egg.

Additional Information

While spermicides can be used alone, they are often combined with other barrier methods like condoms or diaphragms for increased effectiveness. The most common active ingredient in spermicides is nonoxynol-9. It's important to note that spermicides do not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and may even increase the risk of HIV transmission if used frequently.

Spermicides are available over-the-counter and don't require a prescription. They should be inserted shortly before intercourse and left in place for several hours afterward. The effectiveness of spermicides alone is lower compared to other contraceptive methods, with a typical use failure rate of about 21% per year.
