Vasocongestion
Updated:Vasocongestion is the swelling of bodily tissues caused by increased blood flow and fluid retention during sexual arousal. This physiological response occurs in various parts of the body, most notably the genitals, and is a key component of the sexual response cycle. In people with penises, vasocongestion causes erections, while in people with vulvas, it leads to the swelling of the clitoris and labia, as well as vaginal lubrication.
Additional Information
Vasocongestion isn't limited to the genitals. During sexual arousal, it can also cause:
- Swelling of the nipples and breasts
- Flushing of the skin (often visible on the chest, neck, and face)
- Slight swelling of the lips
This process is a normal and healthy part of sexual response. The intensity and duration of vasocongestion can vary among individuals and can be influenced by factors such as age, hormones, and overall health.
Examples
