Vaginismus
Updated:Vaginismus is a condition involving involuntary tightening of the vaginal muscles, making penetration difficult or impossible. It can occur during intercourse, insertion of tampons, or gynecological exams. Vaginismus is often accompanied by fear, pain, or emotional distress surrounding penetration. The severity can range from mild discomfort to total inability to be penetrated.
Additional Information
Vaginismus is believed to have both physical and psychological causes. It may stem from past sexual trauma, strict upbringing, relationship issues, or medical conditions. Treatment often involves a combination of pelvic floor physical therapy, vaginal dilators to gradually train the muscles, psychological counseling, and sex therapy. With proper treatment and support, vaginismus is highly treatable in most cases.
Examples
A woman experiences burning pain and muscle tightness whenever she attempts intercourse with her partner.
During a routine pelvic exam, the gynecologist is unable to insert the speculum due to the patient's vaginal muscles contracting.
