Sex Therapy
Updated:Sex therapy is a specialized form of psychotherapy that focuses on helping individuals and couples address sexual concerns, difficulties, or dissatisfaction. It aims to improve sexual functioning, enhance intimacy, and resolve sexual problems through guided discussion, education, and behavioral interventions in a supportive and non-judgmental environment.
Additional Information
Sex therapists are licensed mental health professionals with additional training in human sexuality and sexual health. They work with clients to identify and work through physical, psychological, and relationship factors that may be contributing to sexual issues. This can include addressing sexual dysfunctions, communication problems, mismatched libidos, past sexual trauma, identity and orientation concerns, and more.
Sex therapy does not involve any hands-on or sexual contact between the therapist and client(s). Instead, it relies on open dialogue, exercises done at home, and techniques to change thoughts, behaviors, and interactions that may be interfering with healthy sexual functioning and fulfillment.
Examples
A couple seeks out sex therapy to address mismatched sex drives and improve sexual communication.
