Smegma
Updated:Smegma is a naturally occurring, cheese-like substance that can accumulate under the foreskin of uncircumcised penises or around the clitoral hood and labia of vulvas. It's composed of dead skin cells, oil secretions, and moisture. While smegma is a normal bodily product, its buildup can lead to unpleasant odors and potentially create an environment for bacterial growth if not regularly cleaned.
Additional Information
Smegma serves a protective and lubricating function in both male and female genitalia. It contains antibacterial and antifungal properties that help maintain genital health. However, excessive accumulation can cause irritation or infection. Regular gentle cleaning with warm water is usually sufficient to maintain proper genital hygiene and prevent smegma buildup.
In uncircumcised individuals, the production of smegma often begins or increases during puberty due to hormonal changes. It's important to note that the presence of some smegma is normal and not a cause for concern when proper hygiene is maintained.
