Prolactin
Updated:Prolactin is a hormone primarily produced by the pituitary gland in both males and females. It plays a crucial role in sexual and reproductive health, as well as other bodily functions. In women, prolactin is best known for its role in stimulating milk production after childbirth, but it also affects sexual function and fertility in both sexes.
Additional Information
Prolactin levels naturally fluctuate throughout the day and can be influenced by various factors, including stress, sleep, and sexual activity. In sexual contexts, prolactin is often associated with the feeling of sexual satisfaction and the "refractory period" after orgasm. High levels of prolactin can sometimes lead to decreased libido or erectile dysfunction in men, and may interfere with ovulation in women.
Interestingly, prolactin is also released during nipple stimulation in both men and women, which can enhance sexual arousal. However, chronically elevated prolactin levels (hyperprolactinemia) can cause various sexual and reproductive issues and may require medical attention.
