Glans
Updated:The glans is the sensitive, rounded structure at the tip of the penis or clitoris. In penises, it's commonly referred to as the "head" or "helmet" and is typically covered by the foreskin in uncircumcised individuals. For clitorises, the glans is the external, visible part of the organ. This area is packed with nerve endings, making it highly responsive to sexual stimulation.
Additional Information
The glans penis and glans clitoridis are homologous structures, meaning they develop from the same embryonic tissue. Both are covered by a protective fold of skin called the prepuce or foreskin, which can retract to expose the glans during arousal. The glans plays a crucial role in sexual pleasure and, in penises, also serves as the exit point for urine and semen.
Examples
During arousal, increased blood flow causes the glans to become more sensitive and sometimes change color.
Some people find direct stimulation of the glans too intense and prefer indirect stimulation through the foreskin or surrounding areas.
