Transgender
Updated:Transgender, often abbreviated as trans, is an umbrella term for individuals whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. A transgender person may identify as a man, a woman, non-binary, genderfluid, or other gender identities. Being transgender relates to a person's internal sense of their own gender and is separate from sexual orientation.
Additional Information
Transgender people may choose to socially or medically transition to align their gender expression with their identity. This can involve changing one's name and pronouns, dressing differently, or undergoing hormone therapy or gender-affirming surgeries. However, being transgender is not dependent on medical procedures. Transgender identities have existed throughout history and across many cultures.
Examples
A person assigned female at birth who identifies as a man is a transgender man.
An individual assigned male at birth who undergoes hormone therapy and surgery to align their body with their identity as a woman is a transgender woman.
A person who does not identify strictly as a man or a woman, regardless of their assigned sex, may identify as non-binary, which falls under the transgender umbrella.
