Heteronormativity
Updated:Heteronormativity refers to the assumption that heterosexuality is the default, normal, or preferred sexual orientation in society. It's a worldview that promotes heterosexual relationships as the norm and often ignores or marginalizes other sexual orientations and gender identities. This concept extends beyond just sexual orientation to include assumptions about gender roles, family structures, and societal expectations.
Additional Information
Heteronormativity can manifest in various ways, from subtle societal expectations to more overt forms of discrimination. It often intersects with cisnormativity, the assumption that being cisgender (identifying with the gender assigned at birth) is the norm. Recognizing and challenging heteronormativity is an important aspect of creating more inclusive and equitable societies.
The concept is frequently discussed in LGBTQ+ advocacy, gender studies, and sociology. Critics argue that heteronormativity can lead to the erasure or stigmatization of LGBTQ+ individuals and relationships, as well as reinforce restrictive gender roles for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation.
