Gender-expansive
Updated:Gender-expansive is an umbrella term used to describe individuals whose gender identity, expression, or behavior extends beyond the traditional binary concepts of male and female. This term encompasses a wide range of gender identities and expressions that don't conform to societal expectations or norms associated with a person's assigned sex at birth.
Additional Information
Gender-expansive individuals may identify as non-binary, genderqueer, transgender, gender-fluid, or with other gender identities that fall outside the traditional gender binary. The term is inclusive and allows for a broad spectrum of gender experiences and expressions. It's important to note that being gender-expansive is about personal identity and not necessarily related to sexual orientation or physical characteristics.
People who identify as gender-expansive may:
- Use various pronouns, including they/them, or neopronouns
- Express their gender through clothing, hairstyles, or mannerisms that mix or transcend traditional gender norms
- Feel that their gender identity fluctuates over time
- Reject gender labels altogether
Examples
A person assigned female at birth who identifies as neither exclusively male nor female, but somewhere in between or beyond these categories.
An individual who expresses their gender through a mix of traditionally masculine and feminine clothing and accessories, regardless of their assigned sex at birth.
