Dental Dam
Updated:A dental dam is a thin, flexible sheet of latex or polyurethane used as a barrier method during oral sex. Originally designed for dental procedures, it has been adapted for sexual health purposes to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) during oral-vaginal or oral-anal contact. The dam acts as a barrier between the mouth and genitals or anus, preventing the exchange of bodily fluids.
Additional Information
Dental dams come in various flavors and are typically square or rectangular in shape. They can be purchased at many pharmacies, sexual health clinics, or online. In a pinch, a dental dam can be made by cutting open a condom or latex glove. While less commonly used than condoms, dental dams are an important tool for safer sex practices, especially for people engaging in oral sex with multiple partners or those concerned about STI transmission.
Examples
Using a flavored dental dam during oral-vaginal sex to enhance taste while providing protection
Incorporating a dental dam into oral-anal play (rimming) to reduce the risk of bacterial transmission
