Syphilis

Updated:

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It is spread through direct contact with a syphilis sore during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Syphilis can cause serious health complications if left untreated, but it is curable with antibiotics.

Additional Information

Syphilis progresses in stages if untreated:

  • Primary stage: Painless sore called a chancre develops at the infection site.
  • Secondary stage: Rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and other symptoms occur.
  • Latent stage: No symptoms, but the infection remains.
  • Tertiary stage: Severe complications affecting the brain, nerves, eyes, heart, liver, bones, and joints can develop.

Pregnant women can pass syphilis to their unborn child, potentially causing serious complications. Regular STI testing, using condoms, and having open conversations with partners are important prevention measures.

Examples

Getting tested for syphilis and other STIs after having unprotected sex with a new partner.

Completing a course of antibiotics to cure syphilis after receiving a positive test result.
