Intersex
Updated:Intersex is an umbrella term used to describe a variety of conditions in which a person is born with reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn't fit the typical definitions of female or male. This can include variations in genitals, chromosomes, gonads, or sex hormones.
Additional Information
Being intersex relates to biological sex characteristics and is distinct from gender identity or sexual orientation. Intersex traits are natural variations and do not always require medical intervention, although in some cases, intersex people may undergo treatments. Historically, the medical community labeled intersex traits as "disorders," but this is changing to a focus on body diversity. Experts estimate up to 1.7% of the population has intersex traits.
Examples
A person born with genitals that have some characteristics associated with both male and female anatomy
Having a combination of XX and XY chromosomes in the cells of the body
Developing natural variations in sex hormone levels that differ from expectations based on genital anatomy
